Hi everybody! We are thinking of flying down south to Mexico this winter. Newbie question: is Cancun better or Mayan Riviera. We want wide open seas with white sand, safety and possibly archaeological sites nearby. Thanks.

We've been there 8 times and on each trip we spend a day or two in Cancun. Cancun hotels do have nice beaches but we prefer it down the coast now. We rent a car and drive to Mahahual down near the Belize border to a bed and breakfast called the Mayan Beach Garden Inn. Google it. There are so many hotels on the Riviera its just a bit too much of a tourist trap. Playa del Carmen is a cool little town about 1/2 hr south of Cancun and another 1/2 hr south is Tulum with ruins on the beach. Most of the Larger ruins like Chitzen itza are inland and about 2 hrs from Tulum 2.5 hrs from Cancun via the main highway. There is some ruins with a nice temple 15-20 minutes south of Tulum called Muyil that get very few visitors and worth a visit. We've been to 12-15 different ruin sites through out the Yucatan and the most memorable are Ek'Balam, Uxmal , Chichen Itza Coba ,Dzibanche, Chacchoben and Tulum. We love it down in the Yucatan and hope to be there again next winter aas well with the hope of getting to Palenque and a few others on the way there.

Playacar in the Mayan Riviera has some nice resorts with beautiful beaches. It is very close to Playa del Carmen. You can organize tours and excursions from your resort. There are also theme parks near by that are lots of fun. Tulum also is close by, and has a nice beach to check out after you visit the ruins. We will also be making a seventh return trip to the Mayan Riviera in November. With so many things to see and do, it will take several trips to fit them all in.
