is it safe to travel to cancun/ riviera maya?

my husband and i were planning on staying in a resort in riviera maya/cancun area and my mother warned us of recent crime in mexico. however, just like USA, mexico is pretty large and i wouldn't be scared to go to seattle if there was a lot of crime in chicago or something. i guess my question is has the recent crime (something to do with drug lords and things of that nature) had any effect in cancun area? i have travelled to mexico twice, once in los cabos and once to puerto vallarta. i've never had a problem, we just like to relax at the beach and hotel and normally do an all inclusive so that we dont have to leave the hotel to eat or anything.

The Cancun/Riviera Maya area of Mexico is nowhere near the areas that are experiencing the problems your mom is referring to.I'm sure you will be just fine...Enjoy your vacation.

we honeymooned down in the Riviera Maya. The resort we were at just warned us about taking taxi's that weren't from called from the hotel, or getting in a van off the side of the road. They told us that any of the big white vans were totally safe as they travel back and forth in to the city and the resorts. Those were driven by employees of the hotels.



Just use your head and be ware of your surroundings when you're off the resort grounds. Watch your camera, purse, etc. like you would normally in any city. Probably stay out of alley ways and dim lit streets.



Have a great time though. It's absolutely beautiful there.

Just got back from Playa Del Carmen....beautiful city, friendly people. I suggest you exchange your money to Peso's when you get there. Not all of the shops are aware of the exchange rate. Have plenty of $1's and $2's for tips. That way you don't have to wait for change or get the wrong change. We spent a majority of time on 5th Avenue. Have a great time and don't be too afraid, just be smart!

I am from the US and I feel safer here than in most US cities!



Unless you are going to try to overthrow a Drug Kingpin or the Mexican government...then you will be safe too!
